Myofascial Release Therapy: How It Helps Relieve Pain

What Happens During Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myofascial release therapy is done by your healthcare provider trained in the therapy. Your provider may be a:

  • Physical therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Chiropractor
  • Massage therapist
  • Athletic trainer
  • Sports medicine therapy
  • Osteopathic physician

You will have your session in a private room at your provider’s office. Firstly, your provider will locate the fascial tissues throughout your body that feel tight and stiff. These areas are known as trigger points or knots. Once the trigger points are located, they will apply gentle, constant pressure to these areas.

Your provider will use direct contact on your skin, without any oils or lotions. They need to be able to feel the stiffness in your fascia. Your provider will slowly apply pressure and try to lengthen your fascial tissues. They will knead and stretch your fascial tissues repeatedly. Once they feel the pressure and tension release, they will move on.
