Endometriosis: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

The most common symptom of endometriosis is pain. The pain can be severe or mild. It is usually felt in the lower back, pelvic region, and abdomen. It is important to note that not everyone will experience symptoms of endometriosis. In some cases, endometriosis is usually discovered during another procedure or test for fertility.

The most common symptoms experienced by people who have endometriosis include:

  • Very painful menstrual cramps
  • Abdominal pain [1] or back pain during your period or in between periods
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Pain during sex
  • Heavy bleeding during periods or spotting (light bleeding) between periods
  • Infertility (difficulty becoming pregnant) [2]

The severity of endometriosis and its symptoms are independent of each other. Some people may experience only small patches of the condition and still feel intense pain. On the other hand, some people may have many patches of endometriosis and feel mild pain.

In most cases, people experience ping during periods when they have endometriosis. The common areas for the pain include the pelvic area, lower back, and abdomen. Periods may also be heavier than normal and light bleeding may occur between cycles.
