Endometriosis: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

What are the causes of endometriosis?

More research needs to be done to understand the main causes of endometriosis. Endometriosis is characterized by the development of tissues similar to the lining of your uterus in other areas of your body. When these tissues grow in the wrong area, like the ovaries, intestine, Fallopian tubes, and organs within your pelvis, it can lead to painful symptoms. In most cases, this pain is related to worsened inflammation and often fibrosis and adhesions.

The presence of endometrial-like tissues in areas outside of your uterus can lead to adhesions (scar tissue). In most cases, these sections of scar tissue fuse with your organs and create a connection with other organs. This can result in pain and discomfort.
