The main effect of genitourinary syndrome of menopause occurs in the genitals and urinary tract, which can lead to a variety of symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal itching
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Increased discharge
  • Loss of libido
  • Reduced lubrication
  • Painful orgasm
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Painful urination

Most of these symptoms are also common in other conditions that affect the urinary tract or genitals, making it more difficult to diagnose this condition. However, the most common symptoms of GSM are painful intercourse and vaginal dryness. So if you are experiencing these symptoms, you should visit your doctor.

Unfortunately, GSM is largely undiagnosed in the menopausal population, mostly because it can be embarrassing for people to discuses some of these symptoms, especially those that are traditionally described as a normal part of aging.
