Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause

Treatment for GSM

The first step of treatment, once your doctor or gynecologist discover that you have GSM, is to perform a physical examination and a thorough review of your symptoms and medical history. You doctor will ask certain questions about your sexual history and also try to discover when the symptoms began.

A pelvic exam, which is a physical exam of the vulvovaginal area will allow your doctor to physically feel the physical changes that may have occurred. Laboratory and diagnostic testing will also be done to identify any underlying conditions that may be causing the symptoms, an example is any sexually transmitted infections.

The aim of any treatment given is to relieve the symptoms and improve one’s quality of life. Three major treatment options for genitourinary syndrome of menopause include:

  • Local estrogen/DHEA therapy
  • Systematic estrogen therapy
  • Topical lubricants and moisturizers
