What Are the Causes of PCOS?

Scientists are yet to know what exactly causes PCOS. However, they believe that elevated levels of male hormones prevent the ovaries from synthesizing hormones and making eggs normally.
Studies show that genes, inflammation, and insulin resistance can all cause excess production of androgen,
Insulin resistance
Various studies have linked insulin resistance [2] to PCOS. A particular study showed that about 70% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance.
Insulin is produced in the beta cells of pancreas. It helps with the utilization of sugar from foods for energy. The body’s demand for insulin increases when cells are unable to utilize insulin properly. The pancreas then produces more insulin to compensate. The presence of extra insulin causes the ovaries to produce more male hormones. Obesity is a major cause of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance and obesity are major risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
Inflammation
Studies show that women with PCOS have elevated levels of inflammation in their body. Being overweight can also cause inflammation. Various studies show that excess inflammation in the body can cause high androgen levels.
Genes
Research shows that PCOS can be an inheritable condition. It is possible that many genes, and not just one, can cause the condition.
