Radical Mastectomy: What You Need to Know

What to do in preparation for a radical mastectomy

You should think about reconstructive surgery before your mastectomy. It might wait till after your mastectomy or begin at the same time. You may also decide against having reconstruction.

Your decision can be taken into account by the surgical team while planning the procedure.

Consider spending one or two nights in the hospital. If there are issues or the procedure requires reconstruction, you might require a lengthier stay.

Here are some pointers for preparing:

  • For toiletries, personal stuff, and an extra set of clothes, bring a small bag. Include a loose, comfortable top that you can wear at home and that doesn’t have to go over your head. An extra-large zip-up hoodie is suitable.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions on not to eat and drink at some appointed time, typically midnight the night before surgery.
  • Before the procedure, find out whether you should keep taking your regular medications or quit.
  • Plan ahead for your trip, and include a little pillow to shield your chest from the seatbelt.
  • Stock up on food and make plans for assistance when you come home.
