Subareolar Breast Abscess: Symptoms, Causes & More

Ways to Treat Subareolar Breast Abscess

The first treatment plan is to take antibiotics for 10 to 14 days. Recommended antibiotics include:

  • Amoxicillin/clavulanate (Augmentin) a drug combination, also known as co-amoxiclav
  • A combination of antibiotics erythromycin and metronidazole
  • A combination of antibiotics clarithromycin and metronidazole

Drainage

Drainage of pus may also be an option. This will depend on the size of your abscess and how severe it is. This should only be done by a professional medical practitioner. It will involve cutting your abscess, local anesthesia may be given to numb the area.

Surgery

Surgery may be recommended if the infection does not go away after taking antibiotics, or if it keeps coming back after initially clearing up. Surgery will involve the removal of chronic abscesses and any affected glands.

If you have nipple inversion, surgery can also be done to reconstruct your nipple.

The surgery should only be done by a professional. It may be performed in a doctor’s office, surgical outpatient center, or hospital, depending on the size and severity.
