Tummy Time for Baby – What to Expect

How to create time for tummy time

Creating time for time every day may seem difficult, but with proper planning it becomes easy. You can do it immediately after giving your baby a bath or changing a diaper. It is not advisable to practice tummy time after a meal. It may disrupt digestion [6] and result in gas or spit up. Some babies release gas more easily when they are on their tummies.

Tummy time usually yields more positive results if it is practiced from an early age. You can do this anywhere, even in the hospital. All you have to do is lay your baby on her back and provide adequate support to the neck.

You can practice tummy time during quiet moments. To be more engaged in the practice, you can lay down or sit beside your baby, and place her in the appropriate position. You can also read a book to your baby.

Experts recommend trying these activities during the practice:

  • Place a nonbreakable mirror in front of your baby so they can see their reflection. This is best for babies between 3 months and older.
  • Put your baby on an inflatable water mat. The mat should be full of colors and textures.
  • Involve a gym tool or activity so your baby can have more fun.
  • Place a toy several inches away from your baby’s head. Then move the toy so your baby can follow it with her eyes.

You can bond with your baby and create happy memories using tummy time
