Understanding Baby Overstimulation: Why It Happens, Signs and How to Soothe It

Know the Signs of Overstimulation

You should know what triggers your baby and signs, so you can plan properly how to manage them when overstimulation occurs. Babies need us to remove them from uncomfortable situations, because they cannot move themselves.

Here are some things you can do to reduce or avoid your child getting overstimulated:

  • Schedule breaks. Allow your child to enjoy their free time with different activities or events. For example, if you go to a party, make sure your baby gets time to sleep at home after. When in the midst of family and friends, take them to a quiet room for a small break. The breaks should be in quiet, familiar places that your baby knows well.
  • Keep things short. Avoid sending your baby on marathon days full of errands, meetings and others.
  • Create a schedule and stick to it. Try to stick to a particular feeding or mealtime, naptime, and bedtime routine, even if you’re not at home.
  • Reduce your screen time. Experts advise parents to avoid screens for children under age 2.
  • Know and understand your child’s personality. Avoid large crowds if your baby gets overstimulated around them. You cannot change your baby’s personality by overwhelming them. It will only make things more difficult for you.
  • Reach out if you need help. You should visit your doctor regularly, to know what is normal and what is not. They also tell you how to manage the condition.
