Bloated After a Workout: Causes, Treatment and Prevention

TREATMENT

Post workout bloat is a temporary condition; it may leave after a few days or hours. This condition may be painful and uncomfortable. There are some factors that help to reduce post workout bloat, such as:

  • Right amount of fluid: exercises cause the body to lose some electrolytes, and sodium and release sweat. There is no particular measurement of water to take during or after a workout. However, it is advised to weigh yourself before and after a workout to know the appropriate amount of fluid to take in before and after a workout.
  • Well balanced meal: there are varieties of food to eat before and after a workout. Some foods have more nutrients than others. It is advised to seek recommendations from a nutritionist in order to know what to eat before and after an exercise. Simple carbs and proteins like pasta, eggs, and Greek yogurt are mostly recommended.
  • More stretches: in order to regulate the movement in the digestive tract, it is advised to engage in more stretches while trying to relax during the main workout session. Some of these stretches include seated twists and standing forward folds.
  • Reduce carbonated drinks and sugary foods: the taking of sugary foods and carbonated drinks increases the swelling of the stomach. Intake of fried foods after a workout may also increase the intensity of the bloat. Therefore, stay away from fatty, fibrous, and sugary foods.
