Nutrition Facts And Benefits of Cherries

Anti-Oxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Cherries have been found to contain compounds that give anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory protection to the body. Anti-oxidant compounds combat free radicals produced during the digestive process or as a result of exposure to harmful environmental pollutants. When free radicals are not handled properly in the body, they can lead to serious cell damage, different kinds of diseases and aging. Some compounds found in cherries that are known to have anti-oxidant properties include: polyphenols, melatonin, carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and etc. These compounds help to protect the body against heart diseases, cancer, type 2 diabetes and other diseases caused or triggered by oxidative stress.

Cherries also have significant anti-inflammatory properties. [2] They decrease the concentration of nitrous oxide and other pro-inflammatory factors in the body. This is very helpful in combating diseases like hypertension, arthritis and cancer.
