Hard Lump under Skin: 8 Causes and How They Are Treated

Lipoma and the Treatment

Lipomas form when fatty tissue develops beneath the skin, causing a bulge. They are very common and harmless. The exact cause of lipoma is unknown, but experts believe they are caused by trauma to certain areas of the body.

It is important to know that multiple lipomas can sometimes be caused by an underlying genetic condition such as Gardener’s syndrome [3]. It is not uncommon to have multiple lipoma without any preexisting medical condition. Things to know about lipoma include:

  • They mostly feel rubbery
  • They are common in adults between the ages of 40 and 60. However, they can be formed in people of all ages, even in infants.
  • They appear like they are moving when you touch them
  • They are very small. They are usually 5 centimeters (cm) across
  • Lipoma causes zero pain

They can be located in any part of the body. But they are commonly found on the shoulders, armpits, neck and torso.

Lipomas mostly do not need any form of medical treatment because they are usually harmless. However, there are people that do not like the way it looks on their body.
