Can Cats or Humans Get Parvo from Dogs?

As mentioned earlier, parvovirus occurs differently in various species. Cats have a special type of parvovirus that can cause severe conditions, known feline panleukopenia [7]. Studies show dogs cannot get feline parvovirus from cats, but cats can get infected with canine parvovirus. Cats with canine parvovirus usually experience more mild clinical symptoms than dogs do. However, recent studies show that there is a strain of canine parvovirus that can cause severe illness in cats.
Cats can be administered the feline parvovirus vaccine, which is part of the core FVRCP vaccine, to offer protection against canine parvovirus.
Parvo is a specie-specific virus. It occurs differently in various species. Humans have their own strain of the virus. Therefore, humans cannot get parvovirus from dogs and dogs cannot get parvovirus from people. However, doctors still advise people to be extremely cautious when handling puppies with parvo virus. It is important to wear personal protective equipment if you are exposed to an infected dog. Even if you cannot get parvo from a dog, you can spread the virus to another dog through your hands or the clothes you are wearing.
