Fargo, North Dakota

Ranked 14th best small metro area out of 281 for successful aging by the Milken Institute and a regular on Forbes’ Best Cities to Retire lists, the city of Fargo is a great place to retire [8]. The city sometimes gets a bad rap for its cold winters, but this could be a plus if you enjoy winter.
Fargo has one of the lowest median home prices in the country. The climate is stable, the air quality is good, and the city is swarming with doctors. The state does not charge estate tax, but it taxes social security.
