10 Tips for Overcoming Shyness

Trust yourself

Shy people tend to not trust themselves or their intentions. Due to the doubt they feel, they ask some questions and think about certain things when socially interacting. Some of these things include:

  • Is this a smart thing to say?
  • Am I interrupting?
  • What should I say?
  • I wanted to say that.
  • I cannot think of anything to add to the conversation.
  • Where should I start?
  • When is a good time to chime in?
  • Will others be interested?
  • Will my comment hurt someone’s feelings?
  • How much should I contribute?

When they finally make up their mind on what to say and are waiting for a pause to say what’s on their mind, they realize that it is already late and the others have moved to a new conversation. Then they decide not to pass their opinion and do the same thing for the next conversation. This frequently happens in group meetings or conversations. In most cases, all you need to do is to avoid overthinking [4], trust your guts and air your opinion.
