7 Main Causes of Seizures

Brain Infections

A seizure is the result of an alteration of the electrical activity in the brain. Infections that affect the brain might cause this electrical activity to be disturbed. Meningitis is a bacterial or viral infection that causes the membranes (meninges) covering the brain and spinal cord to become inflamed. This inflammation can result in seizures.

Seizures are a common complication of meningitis [5], especially in infants below one year where the prevalence rate is as high as 40 percent. It is also seen in adults who develop meningitis. According to a review [6], adults with bacterial meningitis who develop seizures have a significantly elevated risk of mortality or poor outcome.
