7 Main Causes of Seizures

Stroke

A stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly cut off. This leads to a lack of oxygen in the brain and causes parts of the body controlled by the injured part of the brain to stop working. A stroke is often triggered by the rupture or obstruction of a blood vessel.

If you’ve had a stroke, you’re likely to experience seizures. A study in 2018 found that 9.3 percent [2] of people who’ve had stroke experience seizures. Stroke causes injury to the brain. This injury causes scar tissue to form. The scar tissue sometimes interferes with the electrical activity in your brain and may result in seizures.

You’re most likely to experience an acute seizure within 24 hours [3] of a terrible stroke. The National Stroke Association estimates that about 5 percent [4] of people who’ve had a stroke will experience seizures in the following weeks. In some cases, people who’ve had a stroke may be diagnosed with epilepsy due to persistent, recurring seizure attacks.
