Positional asphyxia occurs when a person’s body is in a position that limits their airways. If the body’s position prevents the normal flow of oxygen or air, this may happen.

Infants and newborns are particularly vulnerable to positional asphyxia. This is because they can in some cases be unable to adjust their position to clear their airways.

An opioid overdose, for example, can impair the brain’s capacity to control breathing. As a result, they are unable to exhale carbon dioxide and breathe deeply. As a result, their bodies produce more carbon dioxide and use less oxygen.
