Asphyxiation: Causes, Symptoms, Treatments and More

Strangulation, Seizure & Obstructed airway due to foreign object

Strangulation occurs when a hand, ligature, or other object applies pressure on the neck. This may make it harder for someone to breathe in oxygen. It may also prevent the body from getting enough oxygen.

A person may experience breathing pauses during a seizure [3], called apnea. These pauses may prevent them from taking in enough oxygen.

The convulsion during a seizure can also cause an object to cover or block one’s airways resulting in asphyxiation.

When a foreign object gets lodged in the airway, choking occurs. It is challenging to breathe in oxygen as a result.

Choking, for instance, can happen if someone consumes food improperly. It can sometimes be traced to alcohol overdose. A person’s gag reflex may be impaired by excessive alcohol, increasing the risk of choking on their own vomit.
