Astragalus: Benefits, Uses and More

Uses of Astragalus

In TCM, there are several ailments that astragalus is used to treat. Scientist have begun studying it as a potential treatment for:

  • Immune support
  • Diabetes complications
  • Heart disease [2]
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [3]

In addition, astragalus in some cases is also used for allergies, constipation, common cold, and upper respiratory infections.

However, before anyone can say for sure whether it’s safe and effective for any medicinal use, more research and high-quality human studies is needed.  Research to this point should be considered preliminary.

For immune support

In 2016, a study examined the effectiveness of taking astragalus orally (by mouth) to prevent pediatric acute respiratory tract infections. Researchers found that the evidence supporting this application was insufficient.

The effects of Astragalus membranaceus on the immune system following exercise were also investigated in a small group of adult rowers. 3 500 mg dosages were employed throughout a rigorous 6-week training camp in the small, double-blinded research.

The therapy group fared better in terms of recovery than the control group. To make conclusions about whether it alters the immune system’s functioning, however, the study’s sample size was too small.
