Astragalus: Benefits, Uses and More

Heart diseases

Astragalus has been studied for a number of heart diseases. It could have a diuretic effect, bringing down blood pressure and relaxing blood vessels.

A small study on astragalus for metabolic syndrome and postmenopausal hypertension (hypertension) revealed some advantages. The regular treatment alone and the regular therapy plus either 5 grams or 10 grams of astragalus per day were contrasted in the study.

The group receiving 10 grams of astragalus had better diastolic blood pressure (bottom number), waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratios after a year. Although encouraging, more extensive research is still required.

The cardiac disease known as viral myocarditis may be treated with astragalus membranaceus, according to a systematic review of studies on the herb in humans and animals. In the therapy group, astragalus reduced dangerous cardiac enzymes and troponin levels (a protein that denotes heart injury).

Based on research, the conclusion is that astragalus is:

  • Antiviral
  • Anti-inflammatory,
  • Antifibrotic (avoids thickening and scarring of damaged connective tissue)

Once more, additional study is required before astragalus may be advised for the treatment of viral myocarditis.
