Dengue Fever: Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Treatments for Dehydration with Mild Symptoms

There is currently no specific vaccine or medicine to treat dengue fever thoroughly. Even though there is no specific treatment for dengue fever, some treatments for the mild symptoms can help to some extent.  If you are still only experiencing the mild symptoms, you should rest, drink plenty of water regularly, and see your doctor.

Treatments for Dehydration with Severe Symptoms

If your doctor think you have dengue fever, the first prescription is pain relievers with acetaminophen. [5] And you should avoid medicines with aspirin, which could worsen bleeding. Your doctor may prescribe some painkillers like Tylenol or Paracetamol. This would help lower the fever and ease the pain.

However, in the case of a more severe form of dengue fever, painkillers may not be enough. Your doctor may suggest that you be hospitalized and administered other treatment like:

  • Blood transfusion
  • Intravenous (IV) fluid supplementation
  • Drip if one can’t take fluid by mouth

Treatment is much easier if the patient is hospitalized. This is because the individual would be closely monitored by the doctor in case symptoms get worse.
