Foods to Eat and Avoid with Osteoporosis

Foods Containing Oxalates, Alcohol and Caffeine

Foods containing oxalates or oxalic acid often affect calcium absorption [5] and must be avoided if you are suffering from osteoporosis. Foods containing oxalates are spinach, rhubarb, beet greens, and beans. These foods contain other healthy nutrients, but shouldn’t be eaten in high amounts or counted as sources of calcium.

Heavy drinking for a long period can cause bone loss, which can worsen symptoms of osteoporosis. Ensure that you significantly limit alcohol consumption if you want to maintain good bone quality.

Foods containing caffeine include coffee, tea, and soft drinks. Caffeine has been associated with decreasing calcium absorption and contributing to bone loss. These drinks must be taken in moderation to avoid weak bones. Soft drinks, particularly colas are associated with bone loss.
