Heat Cramps: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment and More

Age

Heat cramps are more common in adults older than 60 and children. People in this category are also more susceptible to dehydration and other heat conditions. Heat cramps can be highly dangerous when observed in children and old people.

Effects of heat cramps in young people

Unlike adults, it is difficult for children, babies, and teenagers to adapt to extreme temperatures. As a result, they are more susceptible to any heat diseases such as heat stroke [6] and heat cramps. Children have higher internal temperatures than adults. They also sweat less than adults. This is why when you are in a cold place with your child, you feel colder. Children have a warmer bodies.

Effects of heat cramps in older people

As you grow older, you gradually lose your ability to regulate temperature effectively. Experts suggest that it is because the sweat glands become smaller with age. Shrinkage is a natural ageing process for sweat glands [7]. Your perspiration becomes less frequent and your body loses its ability to cool itself if you don’t sweat often.
