Heat Cramps: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment and More

How to Prevent Heat Cramps

You can prevent heat cramps by:

  • Staying hydrated at all times by drinking lots of water or other fluids.
  • Ingest lots of fluid before, during, and after vigorous activity.
  • Consume foods that contain electrolytes, especially before going out to exercise outdoors in hot weather.
  • Stop taking dehydrating substances such as caffeine and alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid vigorous outdoor activities when the weather is hot.
  • You can visit cooling centres in your neighbourhood if you don’t have air conditioning at home.

If left untreated, heat cramps can result in heatstroke. Get urgent attention if any of these occurs:

  • The temperature of 104°F (40°C) or above
  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Shallow or accelerated breathing
  • Weak pulse
  • Fast heart rate
  • Dry skin that has lost its ability to make sweat.
