Treatment for Heat Cramps

Your healthcare provider may give these instructions to treat heat cramps: To relieve heat cramps:
- Adequate rest
- Avoid performing physical activity, and stay in places with good ventilation.
- Always put your body in a prone, resting position.
- Remove layers when wearing heavy clothing.
- Reduce your body’s temperature by placing a cool compress on your neck, chest, or face.
- Avoid strenuous activity.
- Take a lot of fluids. You can drink clear juices, cool water, or beverages that have electrolytes such as Pedialyte, and sports drinks.
- Consume beverages that contain sodium and potassium
- Always stay hydrated, even when your heat cramps have gone.
- Stretching and massage. You can relieve cramps by massaging and stretching out affected muscles softly. Your healthcare provider or fitness trainer may recommend exercises that improve the condition.
