What Are the Benefits and Uses of Hibiscus?

Studies show that hibiscus offers anticancer and antidiabetic benefits. Hibiscus preparations can also help reduce blood pressure, keep the liver safe, and reduce fasting blood sugar.
Cancer
Studies show that antioxidants compounds in hibiscus may also possess anticancer features. Test-tube studies show that hibiscus extract may deactivate enzymes responsible for prostate cancer [3] development and trigger the death of breast cancer and melanoma cells. Hibiscus may also boost the effects of chemotherapy treatments on breast cancer cells.
However, it is important to note that studies on the role of hibiscus in cancer treatment are archaic and mostly limited to test-tube studies.
Obesity
Various studies show that hibiscus may also help reduce weight and protect against obesity. Research in animals shows that hibiscus extracts may help prevent the accumulation of fat cells. This helps prevent complications associated with obesity, like insulin resistance [4] and fatty liver. The fiber in some preparations of hibiscus may also help prevent weight gain.
A study in rats showed that adding ground hibiscus to animal feed decreased body weight, pro-inflammatory compounds in fat tissue, and body fat. Studies in humans need to be done to understand the potential anti-obesity effects of hibiscus.
