What Does It Mean to Be a Very Sensitive Person?

It is important to understand what it means to be highly sensitive, before talking about how to improve their sleep.
The highly sensitive characteristics is scientifically referred to as sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), effects 15 to 20 percent of the population.
Highly sensitive people possess overactive nervous system and they are more sensitive to strange acts in their environment. For example, they can be:
- Easily startled by loud noises
- Very emotionally flexible
- Disturbed by things like bright light, concentrated perfumes and itchy clothes
- Strongly affected by movies, music and arts
- Shy or overwhelmed in the midst of many people
- Unable to adapt to any change in their lives
Studies have shown that highly sensitive people show more activation in response to other’s emotions associated with empathy. Very sensitive people can also mimic the habits of people, exhibiting the mirror neuron system, the most common habits are smiling or yawning.
Highly sensitive people process information and emotions deeper than other people; therefore, they are more connected with the environment and people. They also feel rewarded when great things happen to someone they love, such as getting a promotion.
Highly sensitive people are basically able to feel other people’s emotion just like them.
