Things That Get in the Way of Sleep for Highly Sensitive People

In most cases, very sensitive people are unable to sleep adequately because of heightened awareness to their environment. These are factors that prevent highly sensitive people from getting enough sleep;
Sleep and Anxiety
Highly sensitive people are more susceptible to anxiety and stress. This is mostly caused by higher startle response and heightened responsive nervous system. It is important to know that not all anxiety is experienced the same way.
Anxiety in highly sensitive people can lead to:
- Hypervigilance [1]
- Exhaustion
- Rumination
- Emotional overwhelm
Due to these factors, very sensitive people are unable to get some rest at night. They can remain awake thinking about a friend complained about something or worrying about an upcoming situation.
When the body is in a hyperactive state, there are increased level of cortisol pushing the fight, flight and freeze response. This causes disruption in their sleep.
Exhaustion can also cause difficulties in sleeping. A study was done in 2003 and it was discovered that people that sleep for 4 to 8 hours every night for many weeks did not feel sleepier with time. Lack of sleep can have negative effects on mental health.
