Hypophosphatemia: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

Who is likely to get hypophosphatemia & how common is it?

Everyone can experience hypophosphatemia. In patients who are hospitalized or admitted to intensive care units, acute and severe hypophosphatemia is more typical (ICUs).

A moderately frequent laboratory abnormality that is frequently an accidental (insignificant) finding is mild hypophosphatemia. In this instance, it often has no symptoms and affects up to 5% of people.

With a frequency of up to 80%, acute and severe hypophosphatemia is far more common in several disorders, such as alcohol use disorder, diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA) [3], and sepsis [4].
