Hypophosphatemia: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

Symptoms of hypophosphatemia

Depending on how bad it is, hypophosphatemia has varying symptoms.

The majority of persons who have mild hypophosphatemia are asymptomatic and have minor blood test results for the condition. Mild hypophosphatemia may cause generalized mild to severe muscular weakness in some patients.

The following are signs of severe hypophosphatemia:

  • Pain in the bones and muscles.
  • Muscle weakness
  • Altered mental state, such as feeling confused or agitated.
  • Weakening in the reflexes or numbness.

If severe hypophosphatemia is left untreated, it can cause death and a coma. Go to the closest hospital as soon as you can if you are showing signs of severe hypophosphatemia.
