Infected Hair Transplant – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Symptoms of infected hair transplant

Infection during hair transplant is a complication that can occur when microbes enter open wounds at the site of the donor hair follicles or at the reception site. The scalp houses a large network of blood vessels that make it easy for your immune system to be able to target pathogens. A Study made in 2014 with a male patient showed that infection of the scalp is rare, and when they occur, they are mostly never serious.

The most common type of infection is a surgical infection, they usually develop 3 to 7 days after the procedure is completed. Some of the symptoms of hair transplant infection include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Pus flow
  • Abscesses
  • Itching
  • Bleeding
  • Burning or warm sensation
  • Redness and discoloration

Not all symptoms call for alarm, some bleeding and swelling may be normal and may stop or disappear after some time. But certain symptoms can get worse instead of better, and that may last a long while, could be more than a week. In this case, you are probably dealing with an infection.

Further symptoms of an infected hair transplant include nausea [2], vomiting, fever, headaches, swollen lymph, fatigue…

If you experience any of these symptoms you should immediately speak to your doctor to avoid more complications.
