Infections that Cause Food Poisoning

Campylobacter & Listeria

Campylobacter may not be as common as salmonella and E. coli, but it can lead to severe food poisoning. It is one of the most common causative agent of gastroenteritis in Europe and the United States. According to experts, the bacterium can also lead to arthritis [2], Guillain-Barré syndrome [3] (serious, progressive muscle weakness), and high fever. In most cases, infections and resulting illnesses are usually caused by consumption by infected poultry or poultry products.

Listeria outbreaks in the United States of America are commonly caused by ice cream, raw, unpasteurized cheese and milks, raw or undercooked poultry, and seafood. Like other food borne illnesses, a listeria infection can also cause fever and diarrhea. These infections can cause life-threatening symptoms in pregnant women. It can also lead to miscarriage, premature birth, and dangerous infection to the newborn, miscarriage, and stillbirth [4]. It is important to contact your doctor immediately if you notice any symptoms of this infection.
