Is the Palmitic Acid in Coconut Oil Unhealthy?

Don’t Panic!

You don’t need to worry too much. According to the USDA [6] Coconut oil contains about 90 percent saturated fat, with each tablespoon containing 9.57. However, the saturated fat in coconut oil may not be as harmful as other saturated fats. It is also important to know that although plant oils like coconut oils and palm oils contain palmitic acid, they may not affect the body as much as if you ingested palmitic acid alone.

Except palmitic acid, lauric acid [7] is another type of saturated fat that is found in coconut oil, and it makes up about 50 percent of its fatty acid content. However, while lauric acid similarly raises cholesterol, it’s also been found to raise HDL (good) cholesterol [8], even more than it raises LDL (bad) cholesterol. Still, it remains unclear if this increase in HDL counteracts any increase in LDL.
