Interactions with Licorice

It is important that you receive medical advice from your healthcare provider before you take licorice if you are using a medication to treat any of the following:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Any type of infection (including malaria, HOV, or tuberculosis)
  • Arthritis pain, occasional pain, or tension headaches
  • Asthma [4] or allergies
  • Birth control pills [5] or hormone replacement therapy
  • Cancer
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) [6]
  • Hhigh blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a heart condition
  • Migraine [7] headaches
  • Psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis [8], or other autoimmune disorders [9]
  • A psychiatric disorder
  • Seizures [10]

Do not take licorice without medical advice if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Dexamethasone [11], prednisone [12], or other steroid medicine
  • A diuretic or “water pill”
  • Oral midazolam [13] (Versed [14])
  • Warfarin [15] (Coumadin [16], Jantoven [17])
