Low Chloride Levels (Hypochloremia): Causes, Risks, And More

How do you treat hypochloremia?

If your healthcare provider notices an electrolyte imbalance like hypochloremia, they will check whether a drug, or disease is responsible for the imbalance. Your doctor will carry you along and work with you to determine the underlying condition and treat it.

If your hypochloremia is caused by a drug that you are using, your healthcare provider may change your dosage. If your low chloride level is caused by kidney problems or an endocrine condition, your doctor may refer to a doctor that specializes in treating kidney diseases.

Your doctor may administer intravenous fluids (IV) like saline solutions to take electrolytes to the normal levels. Your doctor may also recommend testing your electrolyte levels regularly to ensure the condition is properly monitored.

In mild conditions, hypochloremia can be corrected with certain changes to your diet. These changes may include ingesting more sodium chloride (salt).
