Lucid Dreams: Definition, Techniques, and Benefits

Mnemonic induction of lucid dreams (MILD)

This technique involves leveraging your intentions to recall doing something in the future; therefore remembering that you are dreaming. It involves waking up after sleeping for a few hours, remembering your most recent dreams, and saying a part of the command “the next time I am dreaming, I will recognize I am dreaming”.

It involves people waking up after sleeping for at least 5 hours and telling themselves that they are going to remember the next dream. This uses prospective memory (the act of remembering to do something in the future to trigger lucid dreams).

External stimuli

This method involves machines that deliver external stimuli to a person in REM sleep. These devices include; flashing lights, tones, smells, and so many others. The major aim is to see if those stimuli are added to the sleeper’s dream and if they can cause lucid dreaming.

Masks and headbands that have sounds or light can also be used to induce a lucid taste, some devices can record and play messages used in the MILD technique while you are sleeping.
