Teletherapy – What It Is, Benefits, Uses and Limitation

For Therapist

Therapists may also experience some limitations with digital therapy, such as:

  • Ethical and legal issues: A client needs to comply with the state licensing board regulations in both the state they practice in and where they treat the client. Violating this law puts the therapist at risk of losing their license.
  • Client anonymity: Part of the therapist’s job is to prevent clients who are capable of causing harm to themselves from doing so. With teletherapy, the therapist may be unable to do so. Clients may also be able to conceal their identities. The therapist must inform the proper authorities if a client tends to harm themselves.
  • Client privacy: Therapists will need to be extra cautious about the safety and privacy of a client’s data to comply with HIPAA. They will need to choose the right platform and encrypt clients’ data.
  • Communication: Establishing strong communication with their client over a digital network can be a bit more difficult. Therapists will also struggle with reading body language and subtle forms of communication. This will cause inefficient treatment.
