Side effects of a deep tissue massage

It’s not unusual to have some lingering soreness for a few days after a deep tissue massage. You can relieve the soreness by using a heating pad or a cold pack wrapped in a towel.
Though massage therapy is generally safe, deep tissue massage uses very firm pressure and may not be safe for everyone.
Speak to your doctor before having a deep tissue massage if you:
- having a clotting problem or a history of blood clots
- consume blood thinners
- have a bleeding condition
- have cancer or are having chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer [6]
Deep tissue massage should be avoided by anyone who has osteoporosis or cancer that has spread to their bones since the intense pressure could result in a fracture. Also avoid receiving deep tissue massages if you’re expecting. Swedish massage and other softer styles of massage might be a better choice.
You must postpone if you have an open wound or any form of skin infection in order to prevent contracting another infection or exacerbating an already present one.
