What Is MGUS?

What Are The Causes of MGUS?

The primary causes of MGUS are unknown. However, scientists and doctors believe that certain genetic mutations and environmental factors may be risk factors to developing this condition. Doctors are certain that MGUS causes the development of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and the production of M protein.

Studies show that MGUS is more likely to occur in African Americans than Americans. This is usually because of genetic factors. Environmental factors may also be responsible, but there is not enough evidence to prove this. Other factors that increase the risk of having MGUS include:

  • Older age
  • Being male
  • Having a family history of MGUS or related diseases
  • Having chronic inflammatory conditions and chronic infections
  • Smoking
