Antihistamine (Benadryl) FOR Sleep: Is It Safe?

What Are the Disadvantages of Using Benadryl for Sleep?

Asides from having the ability to block histamine, doxylamine succinate and diphenhydramine can also act as an anticholinergic. That is, they can slow down the activities of acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous system.

Let’s take a look at some of the disadvantages of taking Benadryl for sleep

Pregnancy and Nursing

Doctors advise pregnant women to be careful when using drugs that contain antihistamine. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Benadryl is safe to take for allergies in pregnant women. However, the organization has not made any recommendation concerning the use of a sleeping drug for pregnant women. Animal studies do not show that these drugs can have any negative effect on the fetus. This is why Anticholinergic drugs [1] are referred to as FDA pregnancy category B drugs. It is important to use first-generation antihistamines only when necessary or stay completely away from them if you are pregnant or nursing.

Memory Issues

Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that helps the brain perform various functions, such as thinking and short-term memory. Anticholinergic drugs release a cognitive impairment that affects the function of the brain even after you stop using it. According to a 2018 study, people who use anticholinergic drugs for a long period are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease [2] and dementia. Research shows that the increase in risk of developing these cognitive disorders is due to long-term usage of anticholinergic drugs.
