When using doxycycline to treat malaria, it is important to start taking the drug 1 or 2 days before going to a place where malaria is common. Do not stop taking the drug even after you have left the place. You can use other methods to prevent malaria, like insect repellants, nets, and protective outfits. In most cases, the drug is administered by injection to treat malaria. [1] Do not stop using the drug earlier than recommended by your doctor and use it as prescribed.  You become more susceptible to stronger infections if you miss a dose. The drug does not work for viral infections, [2] like a common cold or flu.
