Side Effects

Femara causes both mild and serious side effects. Most of these side effects are common among users while some are very rare. Mild side effects of taking Femara may include the following:

  • Edema in the ankles and hands
  • Bone pain
  • Spotting: This is also known as vaginal bleeding, despite not having a menstrual period.
  • Flushes
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Lack of energy
  • Excessive sweating
  • Changes in weight
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dryness of the vagina
  • Increased body temperature
  • Drowsiness
  • Changes in mood

Serious side effects of Femara may include the following

  • Allergy: Some people may develop allergies when they take Femara. Symptoms of allergic reaction to Femara may include skin rash, swellings in your tongue, throat, skin, and problems with breathing. If you develop any of these symptoms, you should stop the drug and visit your doctor immediately for alternative medications.
  • Low bone density: The use of Femara may reduce the density of the bone and increase its tendency to break. This is due to the fact that Femara reduces or stops the production of estrogen. Estrogen helps to strengthen your bone and if there is less production, you might break a bone. Therefore, when you are on Femara medication, your doctor may test the density of your bone and prescribe drugs that may strengthen your bone.

Some of the above side effects leave after some time while others may persist. Consult your doctor if some of these side effects get worse.
