What is Cryosurgery – Purpose, Procedure & Risks?

Procedure of cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is mostly a noninvasive procedure. First, your doctor applies liquid nitrogen on your skin with a cotton swab or spray. To prevent any form of pain or discomfort, your doctor may prescribe a numbing medicine for you.

In the case of an internal surgery, your surgeon will make use of a scope (flexible tube) that can enter certain openings in the body, such as the rectum, urethra, or incision.

The liquid nitrogen at its required temperature is then applied to the targeted cells. Causing the cells to freeze, die, and then get absorbed by your body.

Imaging equipment will be used during the procedure to help guide your surgeon.
