15 Common Causes of Sacroiliitis

Sacroiliitis is an inflammation of the sacroiliac joint that occurs due to an infection, arthritis, pregnancy-induced gait disorders, injury, and in some cases, spine disorders. Inflammation accompanied by this condition can affect the two joints or just one. The sacroiliac joints are located at the inferior part of your spine and they connect to your pelvic area, close to the hips.

Sacroiliitis is usually accompanied by pain that affects certain parts of the body, such as the:

  • Feet (not as common)
  • Buttocks
  • Legs (one or both)
  • Hips (one or both)
  • Lower back

Sacroiliitis is one of the most significant parts of ankylosing spondylitis, a rheumatic disease that causes stiffness and irritation in the hips and spine. It is a progressive form of arthritis that can result in various health complications if it is not treated on time. However, this condition, as a major component of ankylosing spondylitis, is rare and more common in caucasians.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of sacroiliitis is pain. Pain that occurs in this condition is mostly seen in the lower back and buttocks. It can also be seen in the groin, feet, and the legs. Doctors recommend regular movement to reduce the pain. To avoid worsening pain, doctors advise patients to not do the following:

  • Standing for a long time
  • Taking large steps when moving forward
  • Having more weight on one leg than the other
  • Stair climbing
  • Running
  • Sleeping or sitting for a long time
