Common Treatments for Lewy Body Dementia

Cholinesterase inhibitors

These are drugs that work by raising the number of chemical messengers in the cerebrum (neurotransmitter). These chemical messengers are imperative for memory, thinking, and judgment. They assist in repairing alertness and mental capacity and also decrease hallucinations and other character problems. These drugs include; rivastigmine (Exelon), donepezil (Aricept), and galantamine (Razadyne). Usage of these drugs can lead to an upset in the gastrointestinal system, muscle aches, and regular urination. These drugs also raise the risk of arrhythmias in the heart.

An N-methyl-d-aspartate(NMDA) receptor antagonist known as memantine (Namenda) can be added to cholinesterase inhibitor in patients with mild or complicated dementia.
