Common Symptoms of Cataracts

Difficulty Driving at Night

A person who has cataract symptoms will have difficulty driving at night [3]. First, because your vision is impaired and then because the headlights of other cars are annoying, as your eyes become sensitive to lights. This is often referred to as photophobia (strong sensitivity to light [4]): difficulty in focusing and concentrating in bright light can cause headaches. The lens tends to darken with a brown or yellow tint as cataracts become more progressed. This starts to impair night vision and also makes it more difficult for some nighttime tasks, such as driving. Indeed, a report from Australia’s Curtin University [5] showed that the treatment of cataracts decreased the risk of car accidents by 13 percent.  Be extra vigilant at night if you think you have cataracts and don’t drive while your vision is impaired.
