10 Symptoms of Diverticulitis

Bloating

Bloating can cause pain in some people, but it usually leads to a high level of discomfort. [3] It occurs when the gastrointestinal tract is filled with air or gas. Bloating can be described as feeling tight, full, and swollen in the abdominal region. Individuals that feel a hard, painful, and swollen stomach are probably experiencing bloating.

In diverticulitis, bloating can be accompanied by other symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain. Aside from diverticulitis, bloating can occur due to gas and air swallowed when eating or drinking. Activities like smoking, chewing gum, eating or drinking fast, and wearing loose dentures can cause swallowing of too much air, leading to bloating.

There are certain medical causes of bloating. Some are heartburn, weight gain, giardiasis, mental health factors, inflammatory bowel disease, food intolerance, hormonal flux, eating disorders, and some medications.

Some people could experience bloating due to gas accumulation, impaired gas transit, overgrowth, constipation, abnormal abdominal reflexes, and visceral hypersensitivity.
