Moisturizers

Moisturizers [2] improve the skin’s barrier function and reduce the loss of transepidermal water, thereby increasing skin hydration. They are indicated as primary therapy for mild AD and as an adjunct therapy for moderate to severe AD. Clinically, moisturizers decrease the signs and symptoms of AD, including erythema, xerosis, and itching, reducing the risks caused by scratching. Its correct use also favors the reduction of the amount of prescribed topical agents necessary for the adequate control of AD. Generous and frequent application of moisturizer is recommended, especially after bathing and as many times as necessary.

Moisturizers are composed of variable combinations of emollients, humectants, and occlusive substances. Lotion, cream, or ointment can be used. Lotions have a high water content, which allows greater tolerance and evaporation. Creams have a pleasant texture, they are a biphasic emulsion of water in oil or oil in water. Ointments have a greasy texture and fewer preservatives in their formulation, providing less irritability, especially on injured skin
